"Only 16 percent of Christians polled said they read the Bible daily." - Gallup Poll 10/20/2000

Something must be done to bring a stop to the steep decline in people who read and engage in God's Word. Only through reading and understanding the Bible for what it really is, one big narrative, can this alarming trend be reversed.

After Chapters and Verses traces the history of the features that were added to the Bible, such as chapter and verse numbers, section headings, and study notes. It shows how these features make it more difficult, and actually get in the way of us understanding the Scriptures, and explains how International Bible Society (now Biblica) designed a new format to remove all these reading and comprehension roadblocks.

After Chapters and Verses also looks to the future, showing how we can read, study, preach, and teach the Bible more meaningfully and effectively by engaging its books and letters the way their authors purposefully intended."

After Chapters Verses edition by Christopher R Smith Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I wish I could get every pastor (and educated Christian) in America to read this book. I do think the time has come for evangelicalism to discover the benefits of reading the Bible without the artificial typographical constraints we call chapters and verses.

Lest you think this is a piddling point--hardly worth a book, hardly worth the possibility that it will create yet more divisions in Christ's body--hear Smith out. He argues cogently and carefully that important elements of meaning are obscured by our Bibles' habits of inserting little "stops" every few phrases. Our current typographical practices invite the worst kinds of atomizing and out-of-context prooftexting. We need Bible typography that will permit us to look for macro-structures in the text.

I was familiar with arguments like these, though Smith's experience in actually putting together a Bible without chapters and verses gave him many insights I had not yet arrived at. One thing I was not prepared for was the number of helpful insights Smith had for the all-important evangelical practice often called the daily quiet time. He argued firmly against the kind of reading that skips all over the Bible; who encounters literary works this way? He argued for reading big chunks of Scripture and then using subsequent days of quiet time to reflect on those chunks. This section I found extremely valuable. I don't ever remember hearing anyone talk about Bible reading in such depth.

I have a few quibbling objections, mainly to the weight Smith gives to postmodernism--as if printing the Bible his way (see The Books of the Bible, NIV) will keep postmoderns in the church. I also chuckled when he suggested that a bad chapter break between (what we know as) Genesis 1 and 2 may be responsible for young-earth creationism! Doesn't he know that printing Bibles in a single-column format without verse numbers and chapter divisions will lead readers to MY theological positions, not his? =)

Adopting his recommendations for Bible typography won't, in fact, fix the many poor Bible reading practices in the church, and Smith doesn't say it will. But I believe adopting his suggestions is an important, necessary, and universally overlooked step.
Chapters, verses, and section headings impede our understanding of the Bible. Even book divisions! This is a better presentation of God's word.
